Badi Assad, soloSaturday, October 21 • 2pmFlorence Gould Theatre, Legion of Honor
"Her fingers flew across the frets and nylon strings, stretching out to construct improbably expansive chords or play lightning-fast arpeggios." A member of the celebrated Lebanese-Brazilian Assad family that also includes brothers and fellow acoustic guitar masters Sergio and Odair, Badi Assad is a veritable one-woman band, accompanying her virtuoso guitar-playing with lilting vocals and a thrilling arsenal of body-percussion effects. Since winning the Villa-Lobos International Guitar Competition at age 18, she has gone on to worldwide acclaim through concert appearances and a series of discs, including her latest CD release Wonderland, featuring repertoire spanning from Brazilian classics to the Eurythmics. Last seen on the SFJAZZ stage in a trio with jazz-guitar heroes Larry Coryell and John Abercrombie, Assad showcases her artistry at its most intimate in this Florence Gould solo show.
