“Nuevo Tango”Pablo Ziegler TrioSunday, October 29 • 2:00pmFlorence Gould Theatre, Legion of Honor
"...(U)niversal as New Tango has become, there exists one authentic Piazzolla style, and one musician better than any other embodies it now. Pianist Pablo Ziegler, a member of Piazzolla's quintet in the '80s, is the reigning New Tango master." — Los Angeles Times In the pantheon of nuevo tango, Pablo Ziegler is the indisputable heir apparent. After 13 years as pianist for the late Astor Piazzolla’s quintet, he formed his own quintet to continue melding elements of jazz and classical music with the traditional Argentinean tango. Bajo Cero, Ziegler’s latest album with his trio (guitarist Quique Sinisi and bandoneonist Walter Castro) was honored as the “Best Tango Album” at the 2005 Latin Grammy Awards, and Ziegler’s “impressionism with an edge” (All About Jazz) will thrill tango aficionados and newcomers alike.
