“Sophisticated and unpredictable”—Variety
Program Notes
Building on a thrilling 2006 season that saw them named DownBeat’s “#1 Rising Star Jazz Group” and the release of the stunning Live 2006: 3rd Annual Concert Tour, the SFJAZZ Collective returns for its two San Francisco shows riding a wave of accolades. Adding to the excitement is the addition of trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Dave Douglas (“#1 Trumpeter” in DownBeat’s Critics Poll), and an all-new repertoire featuring the work of a quintessential jazz modernist: the iconic pianist, composer, and bebop pioneer Thelonious Monk.
“Thelonious Monk is the earliest of the 20th-century jazz masters whose compositions we have performed to date,” said Joshua Redman, Artistic Director for the Collective and the SFJAZZ Spring Season. “And yet, there is such an innate sense of modernism in his works, something invariably fresh and compelling—melodies that are deceptively simple on first hearing, framed by harmonies that are so rich and complex, and driven by rhythms that are so compelling and infectious. Literally generations of musicians have spent entire careers exploring this body of work. And while to some extent, Monk always sounds like Monk, each successive generation has found new rewards and new angles on the music. To rehearse and premiere our own new work in the context of Monk’s music is sure to inspire new and rewarding directions in the Collective’s group sound.”
The other piece of the Collective’s unique approach to repertoire continues in the original tunes composed by Collective members exclusively for the group. Eclectic, passionate, and most definitely modern, the SFJAZZ Collective pays homage to jazz tradition and to the jazz-loving city that makes this innovative project possible.
