    Program Notes

Still in his thirties, Joshua Redman has an awe-inspiring résumé: a summa cum laude Harvard diploma; first place at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition; a major-label recording contract fresh out of college; and 11 acclaimed albums.  After graduating from Harvard, he opted for a career in jazz over law school, working as a sideman on his father Dewey’s album Choices, andscoring guest musicians like Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins for his early albums.

Since that auspicious beginning, the Berkeley native’s career has continued to grow by leaps and bounds. His Elastic band is a progressive mix of incendiary funk and inspired improvisation. In Redman’s distinguished tenure as the Artistic Director for the SFJAZZ Collective has seen the band grow from audacious idea to international acclaim. And the SFJAZZ Spring Season, of which Redman is also the Artistic Director, has maintained the diverse programming and high standards of the fall’s annual San Francisco Jazz Festival.

Tonight is the San Francisco premiere of Redman’s brand-new all-acoustic trio, featuring fellow Collective-member Eric Harland on the drums and bassist Reuben Rogers (who played on Redman’s albums Beyond and Passage of Time).  Redman’s latest album, Back East, features special guest appearances by his late father Dewey and tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, who makes a special appearance at tonight’s show.

Rounding out the evening is “plays Monk,” a trio of Bay Area favorites tackling the songbook of Thelonious Sphere Monk. Scott Amendola, Ben Goldberg, and Devin Hoff’s many projects on the Bay Area and national scenes include Tin Hat, the Nels Cline Singers, Good for Cows, and TJ Kirk. “plays Monk” fell together when Goldberg suggested they perform only Monk tunes for an upcoming gig. It was a success, and now they thrive playing Monk’s oeuvre, which Hoff calls “one of the greatest bodies of creative work produced anywhere in the 20th century, and a pinnacle in the history of American art.”
