Ever since the release of his first hit “Chora Tua Tristeza” - recorded when he was only sixteen years old - Oscar Castro-Neves has been regarded as one of the founding fathers of bossa nova, a musical movement that captivated audiences around the world and has exerted a profound influence on many other musical styles, jazz in particular. Castro-Neves was a featured artist in the famous “Brazilian Invasion” concert at Carnegie Hall in 1962, along with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto. Since then he has been in constant demand as a composer, arranger, producer and guitarist. In his 50+ year career he has collaborated with Jobim, Elis Regina, Yo-Yo Ma, Joe Henderson, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Stan Getz, Eliane Elias, João Gilberto, Airto Moreira, Toots Thielemans, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Ella Fitzgerald, as well as spending 10 years as guitarist and frequent album co-producer in Sergio Mendes’ Brasil ’66 group. Castro-Neves currently lives in the Los Angeles area and continues to record and tour internationally. He has appeared on SFJAZZ stages four times since 2000.
