Hosted by Bobby Hutcherson, SFJAZZ Executive Director Randall Kline, and SFJAZZ Director of Education Dmitri Matheny at the War Memorial Green Room, this event explored themes and artists featured in the 2006 Spring Season. Mr. Hutcherson provided numerous highlights to the evening with his humor and compelling story-telling, which ranged from his experiences rehearsing and performing with Herbie Hancock, to his sister’s stint with Ray Charles as one of the Raylettes, to his thoughts on composing for the SFJAZZ Collective.

"The Listening Party was wonderful. I didn't expect it to have such an intimate feel but the setting and format of the event made the stage disappear. Bobby Hutcherson did a marvelous job of drawing us into the compositions and sounds with his analogies and a genuine love of the music. I definitely feel like I learned something more about jazz through the commentary of somebody that is so immersed in its soul. It was also enlightening to learn about Herbie Hancock's music and inspirations from somebody that actually used to go to his house just to hang out! The event made me excited for the upcoming season of performances, including the SFJAZZ Collective with "Hutch" himself, and for future Listening Parties. Thanks to SFJAZZ for making these events happen and bringing great Jazz performances to us, year after year!"
